Thinking About Your Next Tattoo? Here’s How to Choose the Right Artist
Getting a tattoo is exciting — but choosing who to trust with your skin can feel overwhelming. Whether it’s your first piece or you’re adding to a full sleeve, here are a few things to look for before you book.
1. Check Their Portfolio
Every artist has their own style. Some specialise in realism, others in traditional, fine line, or colour work. Take your time scrolling through their portfolio and make sure their healed tattoos still look clean and solid — not just fresh photos.
2. Read Reviews and Ask Around
Most studios have Google or Instagram reviews that give you a good idea of how clients feel after the experience. If you’ve got friends with great tattoos, ask who did them — word of mouth is usually the best recommendation.
3. Don’t Rush the Design
Bring references, but let your artist guide the final design. The best tattoos come from collaboration — where your idea meets their expertise. Trust them to adjust things like flow, size, and placement.
4. Prioritise Hygiene and Professionalism
A good studio should feel clean, organised, and professional. Needles are single-use and everything should be sterilised. Don’t be afraid to ask questions — a proper artist will be happy to explain their setup.
5. Wait for the Right Time
If an artist’s books are full, it’s usually for a reason. Waiting a few months for the right tattoo is always better than rushing into one you’ll regret.
